A Life Saviour
By Shivalika Singh
Giving a life to a dying person is above all the things we do in our lives. Likewise, Saswati Mukerji who is a teacher by profession and an ardent pet lover has done all through her life. She has been looking after a stray named Asterix, whose front legs were splayed out towards the back.
He is a street dog, a mongrel found on the streets of Kolkata, kicked and abused by the passerby's and rejected by his own tribe. While he was on the road of leading a miserable life, people kicked and abused him. The dog was rescued and brought to a school called Akshar School, where Saswati teaches. Due to her loving nature, she started taking care of him. Asterix was provided with comfortable bedding and a fan. He was fed by her during the mornings and afternoon; the bond between Saswati & Asterix became such that she got upset even if slightest harm happened to him. Asterix eventually became her family.
For taking care of Asterix, she gave him physiotherapy sessions every day along with proper medicines and food for his well-being. The most important aspect of their growing relationship was that she loved him unconditionally. The relationship between the two grew to that extent that despite her personal problems, she didn't stop paying attention to Asterix. The company of dogs is what gives her calmness and happiness.
Bringing Change in Asterix' Life
In her view, "one's life is incomplete without a dog." For his utmost care, a kennel was placed, in which he lives comfortably and is saved from all kinds of harsh weather conditions.
To provide assistant to Asterix, she also brought a kind of wheelchair for Asterix to help him in walking. With the love and care, she has given him for a small period; it has presently yielded some fruit. One of his front two legs has started to work a bit. The first time he stood on three legs, using his one of the front damaged legs, she was overjoyed and in tears. She felt extremely happy for his achievement and hopes to work more on him for even better results. Saswati has looked very well after his health, and she has recently sent him for sterilisation also. The love given to him has worked miracles for Asterix.
In her own words, when he first stood on three legs, "Between his squeals of delight and continuously excited rolling on the ground, he took my breath away by standing on three legs for a few seconds. To me, it was like seeing the universe in a grain of sand and eternity in an hour. Thank you, my little one.". She has done a lot for him and has always pampered him.
Saswati & Asterix's bonding
For Saswati, the paw prints of Asterix are a way to her heart. They share the relationship of a mother and her son. Asterix-like a young son sometimes misbehaves and she, just like a doting mother controls him sometimes by scolding or telling him to do the right thing.
The bond between the two is evident to everyone. On seeing her, Asterix comes running to her and wants to be cuddled always. He is also very obedient to her. Both of them no matter in how much bad mood they are, they smile the moment they see each other. The ties of their heart are very strong and whenever they meet, their inner peace and joy is experienced and showcased by them.
She cares for him like a child when he is at times sick and to mention he has a proper medicine box. For Saswati, her own well-being is not that much of a concern, but of Asterix is, she gets very worried about his health and takes good care of him, just like a mother would do for her child.
There is one incident to share about their bonding. One day, she was visibly upset because of some problems at home; Asterix on seeing her worried and sad went straight to her and cuddled her...his cuddling and love shown through his eyes gave Saswati the courage to fight her problems with a smile. On the other hand, Saswati has also given Asterix the courage and strength to overcome his problems. They share the purest relationship and their love will exceed to infinity, and it's such that it is quite hard to find in the world as they never want anything in return from each other...they love each other for love's sake and for no other reason.
The relationship between the two is not because Saswati pities him or Asterix likes her as she takes care of him... they love each other for just love's sake, a relation which is hard to find with humans these days as they have become so selfish today. They are each other's lifeline, Saswati is always there for him and he also gives her the unconditional love in return.
They talk with each other in their own animated language where she says something and he replies by barking. They also speak through eyes, as eyes are good for showing emotions of the heart, also it has been said that "eyes speak a thousand words." Their lives have become successful by getting so pure love from each other...Saswati is an angel for him, and he too is living up to her expectations and becoming a handsome young angel.
Recently, when he was sent for sterilisation to a kennel for five days, she was extremely worried and concerned for him than he himself would have been. When he returned after 5 days, she was very happy to see him...Seeing them together is very heart touching for anyone...they seem like as they were always meant to be together. Saswati & Asterix lives a peaceful life in each other's company; their relationship is very precious to them and to the people who understand its depth.
The true relationship between a mother and an infant is shown by them... Asterix often waits for her with his innocent yet intense eyes and when she arrives, his face lights up and eye's glitter with true happiness. The same goes for Saswati also, when she sees him her face shows the most serene expression, in which one could dive and see how much joy and happiness it gives her to see and be with Asterix. He is the love of her life to whom she never intends to lose.
Asterix has improved a lot physically and healed emotionally too only because of her unconditional love and care...he has also always been a support for Saswati in her hard times. The time spent by them together is very precious and always filled with happiness because if at times one of them is sad, the other consoles and makes him or her happy.
This kind of love is found with much difficulty in one's life and Saswati & Asterix are very fortunate to have it. When together, they are oblivious to the world and nurture the time spent together, while spreading positive vibes to others.
